Reflective Synopsis

Effective teaching requires a teacher to be creative with designing teaching strategies.  Using digital technology is a great way to do this. That being said, it all depends on the teacher. An excellent teacher can effectively teach a class using basic teaching strategies. By that I mean with just a whiteboard and marker the teacher can present a great stimulating lessons for the students who can gain exceptional educational benefits. On the other hand a. poor teacher could have all the resources in the world but if they don’t know how to effectively use them to better the learning of their students.  These resources then have no educational benefit to the students in the class. I have been reflecting on these thoughts over the last seven weeks of this course and will continue to keep them in the back of my mind for as long as I am a teacher.

Over the past seven weeks we have been exposed to a number of different technologies to incorporate into our teaching practice. SAMR model and Blooms Taxonomy are great structures that we used to assess how valuable a digital tool is in the classroom. The SAMR model is, I believe, a big help in knowing how to understand and develop the use of a digital tool through the four steps Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition. While Blooms Taxonomy assisted in providing me with the fundamental questions to think upon when learning about digital pedagogies. These models were great in focusing my thinking when evaluating digital technology. They are great as they get you to focus on the basics of the digital tool and then build on this to use them to advance the students learning. I will continue to use these models to develop and teach effective digital pedagogies to students.

During the length of this course I have learnt about these models and how to utilize them to affect my own digital pedagogies. I have learnt how the SAMR model is designed to use creative teaching strategies as a foundation to build upon to develop higher order thinking and learning within our students. It has also allowed me to focus my thinking, which will allow me to identify how well some specific digital technological tools can have a positive effect on students with different types of learning styles. As all students learn in different ways, it is obvious that different types of digital tools would have different effects on student learning styles.

I used the SAMR and Blooms Taxonomy models to review work and lesson plans that I used at my last placement, so I could see where I could have improved these plans. While reviewing my lesson plans, I notice that a fair few areas were involving digital pedagogies or building on the small parts of the technology.  Had I used these the SAMR and Blooms Taxonomy models better I would have engaged the student’s attention more and inspired a greater participation within the class. One on my biggest problem on placement was that the students began to get restless and started to loose concentration.  I can now see quite clearly that by using the SAMR model, where I could have made changes to provide optimal strategies for my student learning potential.

There are some major aspects that need to be considered when introducing digital technology into the classroom. Student’s safety is the main priority, and then any laws associated with the technology such as the copyright laws.

The Biggest issue with introducing digital pedagogies into the classroom is that some students may use it inappropriately. Students may test it out and use it to view inappropriate content. Some may use  or it to pick on others (cyber-bullying) or use it for any other purpose that could jeopardise their safety such as giving personal information to complete strangers over the internet. It is important that when we look at using digital technology in the classroom, that teachers are themselves aware of the risks, monitor the process and to highlight the dangers of the technology to the students when it is being used in the classroom.

Cyber bullying is common in this day and age as technology is a now a major part of our society. Cyber bullying is a serious issue that can have and has had, some devastating results. Some people believe that what they say to others online has less of an impact on them.  They see that they are hidden from any direct blame for the affect their words have on others.  It is vital that we make students aware of the dangers associated with their actions on how they treat people online. Sadly this technology does not turn off as it is passed around and around social media and a victim rarely gets a break from the bullying.

When using online digital technology it is important that teachers ensure that they do not plagiarise the work of others. This is illegal. You cannot take credit for other peoples work ever without permission from the original owner. It is important that this is passed on to students to ensure that they can’t take credit for another’s work. Resources used must also be properly referenced to ensure that students and teachers are not breaking copyright laws.

It is important that teachers employ digital technologies into the class room as this is now a major part of our world. Digital technology allows students with different learning styles to engage and learn effectively with it unlimited catering strategies available. Teacher cannot become complacent with using digital technology but must use it wisely. It only makes a positive difference in our lives if the teacher is capable of utilizing the technology appropriately.

Reflection Six: Collaborative Learning

Reflection 6

My engagement

When we first started out I wasn’t sure what to do. I read that we needed to right blog entries each week and comment on others blogs and as I had never written a blog before I was a bit nervous. But after being contacted by Anne, Marissa, Brett and Jessica about starting a collaboration group and some help from Wendy on how to actually create and write a blog it became a lot less intimidating. Rather than trying to follow everyone’s blog it was good to have a small group that I could easily follow and engage with. Positive feedback from the group really encouraged me to post on the group members blogs as we roughly had the same idea about the topic but each of us saw some things a little differently. From then on I attempted to give encouraging feedback on blog postings, highlighting points that were made that really made me think. Since then I have taken into account what others have posted on my blog and what I have read on others blogs as it has really made me aware of how digital technologies can be used to enhance the outcomes of student learning and because of this I will continue to use online collaboration as I believe it benefits all that use it.

Learning Advantages for Students

Online collaboration can open up a number of learning experiences for students. Online collaboration allows students the opportunity to communicate with a variety of different people from all different parts of the world. This allows students to gaining new perspectives and learning opportunities that can open their eyes to new ways of approaching class topics. This can be done by students giving and receiving positive feedback on the ideas of others as well as their own. Online collaboration challenges students to develop their learning styles to effectively incorporate online discussion into how they learn as well as developing their Interpersonal skills to allow them to effectively communicate through all platforms of online collaboration as these skills differ from face to face communication.

Learning Advantages for Teachers

Online collaboration can be a very useful tool that teachers can incorporate into their work. Teachers can not only use online collaboration to assist in student learning, but it is also a useful tool for teachers to use in developing their teaching practice, especially for new graduate teachers that are just starting out. Teachers can use online collaboration to enhance their knowledge and skills as an educator. Teachers cannot be everywhere at once, so using an online collaboration space where they can talk about teaching practices, difficulties they are having or anything else can be a big advantage for teachers rather them trying to find time when they are all free to get together which can be hard for some people. But having an online area in which teachers can follow along and give positive/encouraging feedback on teacher postings can be really helpful to teachers as it allows them to grow and learning in educating students effectively.

Embedded Task 5 Timelines

Timelines

Timelines are a great way of representing the events or progress of a particular task or era in time. Having a timeline allows for a better explanation to a specific period of time. Timelines can be very useful in schools as it allows teachers to combine a variety of resources into one platform that students can also access form home. There are many websites that teachers can access to create timelines the image below is of a timeline from the website Dipity.

Technical Aspects

Easy to Use – online timelines are easy to create. Most sites that you can create a timeline on offer templates as a guide for beginners.
Creativity – timelines are able to be customized to how ever the creator would like, this can assist in setting a particular theme for your timeline. How much you can customize your timeline does depend on how familiar you are with the website.
Sharing – due to it being an online timeline people around the world are able to see and follow your timeline. This also allows you to be able to comment on others timelines.
Adding Resources – these timeline websites allow the creators to link and add multiple types of other resources like videos, images and links to external websites to their timelines.

My Pedagogy

When using timelines in the classroom the most appropriate use I can think of is to use them in my history class as a timeline is a historical representation of somethings journey. Timelines fit into history so well it allows us to plot out events, someone’s life and much more. Timelines can assist teachers at the start of the term to better explain what they will be covering throughout the term, it assist by being a visual representation that will enable students who have different learning styles to get a better understanding of the content.  Timelines also allow multiple forms of information like images and videos to be embedded into them. This feature is great as it allows history teachers to link other resources that can offer more information on a certain period of the timeline.

SAMR

Substitution – The teacher can project a timeline onto the white board to allow them to explain to the students the periods in time and the events that took place that they will be covering in class this term.

Augmentation – the teacher can create an online timeline for the students to work through at their own pace to answer questions that are in their class work booklets.

Modification – the teacher is to create a timeline that shows the multiple of events in history that the class has covered this term. The students are then to access the timeline and choose one event on which to base a short 500 word reflection.

Redefinition – Students are to create their own timeline of a person that had a great impact in the period of history they have been studying this term. Student’s timelines should outline important aspects of that person’s life that lead to them having an impact in this era in time.

Embedded Task 4 Power Point

PowerPoint

Power points are a great way of combining written information with visual information. having that combination of visual and written information more often than not allows for a better explanation of the topic than either could provide along. power points are useful in schools as it allows teacher to combine a lot of great teaching resources into one great presentation. students can also use power points as the perfect tool to create a slide presentation to assist them in an oral assignment.

Technical Aspects

  • Layouts - Power point allow you to structure the layout of you slides in any way you like, it also has templates that are available and all have different design features to suit your power point.
  • Easy to Use - power point is very easy to use. students usually encounter power points in the early years of there schooling and are taught how to use it to assist in oral presentations as well as a variety of other things
  • Customise Layout - it allows you to customise it how ever you like from basic things like choosing the colours of your slides to the content that is in it (e.g.. videos, audio narration, linking websites, etc.)
  • Internet Collaboration - unlike social media PowerPoint does not need an internet connection to be created. although by using the internet you are able to share you slides with others using websites like SlideShare.

My Pedagogy

In Manual Arts and Graphics power points can be very useful. Manual Arts teachers can use power points as a way going through a project with students or teaching them about a specific topic relating to their work. For instance if the teacher had a new class that had not been in the workshop before. they could create a power point outlining the rules and requirements as well as workplace health and safety whilst in the workshop. One of the benefits of using a power point for this is that the teachers can include videos and audio files in the power point rather than having to flick between websites and files on the computer during class as this can sometimes be disruptive. another great benefit to having the information on a power point rather than writing on the board is that the information is always there rather then once you wipe something off the white board it is harder to come back to a it needs to be rewritten but with a power point all it takes is a click of the mouse. power point are great for going through projects as the teacher can step out each step on a new slide this allows going through the project to be more structured and less likely that students would get lost and confused.

SAMR

  • Substitution - Instead of writing notes on the board, I project my power point onto the board for students to take notes from.
  • Augmentation - students are to go on the class wiki where the teacher has put a power point. students are to go through the power point at their own pace watching the video embedded in the slide and answering the questions.
  • Modification - the students are to create a power point on the project they are building in the workshop. there power point is to include their progress tracking on the project, any problems they encountered and how they over came that problem and ideas on changes that could be made to the project to improve it.
  • Redefinition - students are to access SlideShare and connect with others and also search for ideas to improve there project.

Embedded Task 3 Images

Images

Images are used in all aspects of life as a visual representation to give the viewer an idea on a certain topic. Often an image of a topic makes it easier to understand as you can see it rather than reading words and trying to imagine it correctly. Images are useful in schools as they can be used to grab the students attention, they can also be used at a more effective way of explaining things to students as there is a visual representation and they can see how it works. Teachers and students can use images for things like assessment and classwork and there are many websites and apps out there that allow students to modify images to suit there needs. Below is just a small example of how you can edit an image using websites like befunky.

Technical Aspects

  •          Creativity – there are many computer programs that allow students to manipulate and create images in any way they like.
  •          Multiple Forms – Images come in a range of forms these include: photos, drawings, diagrams, plans, etc.
  •          Everywhere – Images are used in everyday live, students are exposed to them every day in a variety of locations.
  •          Social Media – there are many social media website and apps such as Instagram and tumbler that allow people to share and view others images.

My Pedagogy

Well images are already used in Manual Arts and Graphics in the form of plans for students to use to follow in building there projects. My way of incorporating images into manual arts is in the overview of the project and plans at the start of the project. When going through the plans the teacher shows images of the project step by step using the projector. This includes images showing detail of what type of joints are being used while the teacher talks to the class about the reason they are using this particular joint and the positives of using this particular joint on this project (example dovetail joint left). Also the teacher can use images to show the students of some ways they can personalize the project or some creative ideas which the students could use.

SAMR

  • Substitution - Instead of drawing and image of the project on the whiteboard I project and image/images of the project onto the board.
  • Augmentation - Students are to go onto the teachers blog where there are images of the plans of the project students are to freehand sketch and dimension these plans in there notebooks.
  • Modification - using the image on the teachers blog and the sketches they have already done students are to sketch a design adding there own creative aspects to the project.
  • Redefinition - students are now to use a software program such as solid works to draw a 3D representation of their design including the creative aspects that they have added.

Week 3: Embedded Task 2

Social Media is quite popular in today’s society and in particular with today’s youth. They use it on a daily basis to post thoughts, see what others are up to and keep in contact with one another.
With young people having such an interest in social media, many of which are still in school. It has become apparent that in order to engage students in learning incorporating social media into the classroom can be a valuable resource as well as providing new learning experiences for students.
Including blogging in the classroom provides a new tool for students to use in developing their knowledge whilst also including something that they have an interest for (Social Media).

Technical Aspects of Blogs

  •          Easily Accessible – current technology makes accessing a blog much easier. They can be accessed over a wide range of devices (e.g. computers, tablets and phones) and when on the go.
  •          Personalize – the layout and colors of the blog can be personalized by the creator to reflect themselves or the reason the blog was created if not for personal use.
  •          Viewing Blogs and Keeping up to Date – like most social media you are able to view others blogs and make comments on their postings. With blogs being in chronological order it makes it easier keep up to date with the latest postings rather than having to scroll down a page to find it.
  •          Posting – blogs allow the user to post their personal thoughts or ideas/perspectives on a certain topic online for others to see.

Learning Outcomes of using Blogs

  •          Collaborative Discussion – blogs can allow students to enhance their knowledge by allowing them to share their ideas and have people comment and make suggestions gives them the opportunity to work with others gaining a more rounded view of a topic with others adding in their ideas.
  •          New Form of Communication – learning how to use blogs gives students another platform on which they can communicate with others.
  •          Individual Learning – provides another tool for which students can use to learn in their own individual style.
  •          Inspire Writing – the use of blogs can inspire students to write more and allow there to enhance their writing skills.

Blogs in My Classroom

I had to really brainstorm about integrating blogs into Manual Arts. Have the students keep a blog of the work we do in the workshop each week provides them the skills to document their work and new learning experience/skills they encounter. Also for those of the students that are looking at going on to become an apprentice when the leave school it gives them the skills of documentation that they will need whilst an apprentice to prove that they are competent in a certain skill and eventually become a tradesman. A blog could also be used instead of their workshop portfolios, keeping them digitally means that students can keep track of their projects progress by documenting and uploading images of their project each week which also eliminates portfolios going missing and if their project does go missing the images are there as evidence of them having done the work. This also makes it easier for the teacher to track the students’ progress.

SAMR

Substitution - Teacher creates a blog outlining the workshop project for the term with plans linked to the blog. Teacher then shows class during a theory lesson and starts a class discussion about the project. Students take notes as needed.
Augmentation - Teacher uploads theory work that ties in with workshop project each week. students are to read through the theory work at their own pace and at the end  there will be questions for the students about tool, machinery and joints associated with the project.
Modification - Students are to create their own blog. They are to use this blog to update progress on their project each week as well as upload a photo of the project each week.
Redefinition - Students are to access the teachers blog and choose one topic from a list of topics. They are then to go and research their topic and write a reflection to their blog about topic.
